Where are you from?

All through middle school, lived in the city [New York] and through high school, lived in Westchester, NY.

What began your interest in crafting cocktails?

I walked into a bar called Raines Law Room [in New York], when they first opened and sort of fell in love with everything they were doing. I spent a lot of time there, taking notes and talking to people. I come from a family that had a big respect for culinary arts and spirits so when I walked into Raines Law Room, it seemed like something I’d very much enjoy being a part of. I fell in love with all of it. I love using ingredients and making new flavors and it’s an industry where you can talk to people. I like standing at the bar and talking to people about their day and what’s going on in their lives. I’m a people person.

Lantern’s Keep, tucked in the back of the Iroquois Hotel in Times Square, provides an intimate refuge from the masses of guidebook-clutchers and/or visiting family members getting on your last sober nerve.

To usher in fall, head barman Theo Lieberman has introduced The Expat to the list, an autumnal cocktail that is the brainchild of fellow NYC bartender Lauren Schell (you can find her slinging drinks at Little Branch, Milk & Honey and Middle Branch). Made with bourbon (Lantern’s Keep mixologists have a predilection for Elijah Craig 12-year-old or Buffalo Trace) The Expat, says Lieberman, “is a variation on a traditional bourbon shake, except it adds Angostura Bitters and mint, which really bring it together.” Fresh lime juice and a dash of simple syrup elicit a smooth, slightly tart sweetness. Per Lieberman, “It’s always the simple ones that are best.”

Ingredients:
2 oz. bourbon
1 oz. fresh lime juice
3/4 oz. simple syrup
Mint
Angostura Bitters
Combine ingredients in a shaking tin with ice, shake vigorously and strain into a coupe glass. Garnish with a mint leaf and Angostura Bitters.

New York, New York—Reported by Coleman Bentley for Elite Traveler, the private jet lifestyle magazine

If you have ever watched episode of Boardwalk Empire, HBO’s emmy-winning ode to the glamorous push-pull politics of the prohibition-era, you are more than familiar with the sultry speakeasy aesthetic that Lantern’s Keep has brought to the upscale New York bar scene. So slick your hair back and button-up that three-piece suit, this bar has just the drink for you.

Located in the Iroquois Hotel and a World’s Best Hotel Bar nominee for the 2012 Tales of the Cocktail Award, Lantern’s Keep—a favorite hotspot for fashionistas, theatre-goers and business professionals alike –is changing Midtown Manhattan’s imbibed-landscape. Never content to rest on laurels, however, Lantern’s Keep recently asked Head Barkeep Theo Liberman to concoct a contemporary twist on a time honored classic. Thus the The McKittrick Old Fashioned was born. Mixed with Bourbon, sherry and mole bitters, The McKittrick Old Fashioned, like all of Theo’s drinks, is inspired by a different period of the Temperance Movement. Named after the abandoned hotel that hosts the hit off Broadway show Sleep No More, this drink is 90 years of history in a highball.

A perfectly warming brace for the colder months ahead, Lantern’s Keep looks to wet the whistles of New York City whiskey-lovers with the introduction of their McKittrick Old Fashioned.

This recipe comes straight to us from Theo Lieberman, the head barkeep at the Lantern’s Keep at the Iroquois Hotel located in the heart of Times Square in NYC. Theo’s creations are inspired by the Temperance Movement Era, and this cocktail definitely exemplifies this. The cocktail is named after the abandoned hotel that hosts the hit off Broadway show Sleep No More, and we think it’s a pretty good way to wave goodbye to summer.

The restaurant Chez Josephine on Theatre Row is a gem and I eat there when seeing Broadway shows. Also, in midtown are Triomphe and Lantern’s Keep, where the food and cocktails are out of this world. I also love having a glass of wine outside on the patio at Nougatine at Jean Georges on Central Park West. I couldn’t live without Bloomingdales and Zabars. Going for a run or walk in Central Park in the fall when the leaves are turning is amazing. VISIT!
